Western Region Bio-economy Hiring Requirement Outlook by Job Function, 2021-2029

Overall, an estimated 18,870 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 2,020 additional workers in 2021; 2,330 in 2022; 2,320 in 2023; 2,310 in 2024; 1,690 in in 2025; 2,050 in 2026; 2,080 in 2027; 2,040 in 2028; 2,030 in 2029.  For manufacturing and production, an estimated 4,760 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 560 additional workers in 2021; 640 in 2022; 610 in 2023; 600 in 2024; 440 in 2025; 480 in 2026; 480 in 2027; 480 in 2028; 470 in 2029. This represents 25% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For research and development, an estimated 3,850 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 280 additional workers in 2021; 460 in 2022; 470 in 2023; 480 in 2024; 350 in 2025; 450 in 2026; 460 in 2027; 450 in 2028; 450 in 2029. This represents 20% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For management, finance and administration, an estimated 3,380 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 690 additional workers in 2021; 380 in 2022; 380 in 2023; 370 in 2024; 280 in 2025; 320 in 2026; 320 in 2027; 320 in 2028; 320 in 2029. This represents 18% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For distribution and logistics, an estimated 1,210 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 240 additional workers in 2021; 150 in 2022; 140 in 2023; 130 in 2024; 90 in 2025; 120 in 2026; 120 in 2027; 110 in 2028; 110 in 2029. This represents 6% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For marketing, business development and sales, an estimated 990 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 190 additional workers in 2021; 120 in 2022; 120 in 2023; 120 in 2024; 70 in 2025; 100 in 2026; 90 in 2027; 90 in 2028; 90 in 2029. This represents 5% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For quality control and assurance, an estimated 920 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 90 additional workers in 2021; 120 in 2022; 120 in 2023; 110 in 2024; 70 in 2025; 100 in 2026; 110 in 2027; 100 in 2028; 100 in 2029. This represents 5% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For information technology, an estimated 450 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 50 additional workers in 2021; 60 in 2022; 60 in 2023; 50 in 2024; 30 in 2025; 50 in 2026; 50 in 2027; 50 in 2028; 50 in 2029. This represents 2% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For legal and regulatory affairs, an estimated 360 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 50 additional workers in 2021; 40 in 2022; 40 in 2023; 40 in 2024; 30 in 2025; 40 in 2026; 40 in 2027; 40 in 2028; 40 in 2029. This represents 2% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.  For “other” job functions, an estimated 2,950 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 130 fewer workers in 2021 followed by 360 additional workers in 2022; 380 in 2023; 410 in 2024; 330 in 2025; 390 in 2026; 410 in 2027; 400 in 2028; 400 in 2029. This represents 16% of the overall hiring requirement in the region’s bio-economy.
