Building a safer bio-economy: Addressing sexual harassment in the workplace

Main Objective

To create safer, more inclusive workplaces across Canada’s bio-economy by providing employers with practical tools and training to recognize, prevent, and address workplace sexual harassment.

The project objectives are to:

  • Equip employers with knowledge of their legal responsibilities around workplace sexual harassment;
  • Support the development and adoption of inclusive, trauma-informed workplace policies;
  • Increase awareness of how sexual harassment disproportionately impacts equity-deserving groups; and
  • Provide employers with ready-to-use training to help them build a respectful culture that attracts and retains top talent from diverse backgrounds.

Project Description

Workplace sexual harassment is a serious issue that threatens employee well-being and undermines workplace culture. In the Canadian bio-economy—where 80% of companies are SMEs and 70% do not have dedicated HR personnel—this project will fill a critical gap.

Through this national initiative, BioTalent Canada, in partnership with Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), will launch bilingual online training programs tailored specifically to employers in the bio-economy. These courses will:

  • Explain workplace sexual harassment laws in clear, employer-friendly language.
  • Offer guidance on creating trauma-informed, culturally sensitive policies rooted in GBA+ principles.
  • Provide real-world scenarios and strategies to prevent harassment and support those affected.
  • Help employers implement practical solutions—even without an in-house HR department.

BioTalent Canada’s goal is for at least 350 employers to complete the training, with 85% gaining a clearer understanding of their legal responsibilities. We also aim for 70% of participating employers to adopt or revise workplace policies aligned with the training’s best practices.

This initiative is more than just compliance—it’s about building trust, safety, and respect in the workplace.

Industry Need

The bio-economy is growing—and fast. Yet, the sector must overcome a projected shortfall of 65,000 workers by 2029. Hiring from a broader, more diverse talent pool—including women, youth, racialized Canadians, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals—is key to closing this gap and remaining competitive.

However, these groups are often more vulnerable to workplace sexual harassment, making it a barrier to recruitment and retention. For many employers, especially SMEs, a lack of dedicated HR staff makes addressing complex issues like harassment daunting.

This project is designed to ease that burden. It offers practical, accessible, and relevant support to help employers:

  • Build respectful, inclusive workplaces.
  • Attract and retain talent from underrepresented groups.
  • Demonstrate leadership in fostering safe work environments.

By participating in this initiative, employers aren’t just managing risk—they’re investing in their people and future success.
