3 Ways Work-Integrated Learning Will Help Biotech Thrive
Howard Miller
In 2018, the Health and Bioscience Economic Strategy Tables released a report, The Innovation and Competitiveness Imperative, that projected Canada’s health and biosciences exports could double to $26 billion by 2025. The report outlined a variety of recommendations that — if executed — would make this ambitious goal an attainable one.
One such recommendation was based on talent. To become a world health and bioscience leader, Canada’s biotech industry must attract and develop its own talent: graduates, both domestic and international, from Canadian post-secondary institutions.
Work-integrated learning is a key source of talent for the Canadian bio-economy
BioTalent Canada released new findings from its most recent bio-economy Labour Market Information (LMI) study. The data in this new brief—The Talent Differential: The case for work-integrated learning in the bio-economy —was collected from a series of three facilitated roundtable discussions, a survey of 573 bio-economy employers in 2020, and an analysis of data from BioTalent Canada’s current wage subsidy programs.

New National Biotech Training Programs to support youth employment
BioTalent Canada launched its new national online training program: “Essential Skills Fundamentals for the Canadian bio-economy” today. The training program has been developed to address skills gaps identified by both post-secondary institutions and Canada’s fastest-growing bio-economy employers.
The courses will be available to hundreds of students and employer participants from BioTalent Canada’s Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) and other wage subsidy programs in both English and French online. The courses were funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Adult Learning, Literacy and Essential Skills Program.

Biotech career prospects improved with new BioTalent Canada technical skills training
BioTalent Canada and the Stem Cell Network announced the launch of its new national bilingual online “Technical Skills Fundamentals Training Program” that will help students transition successfully to the bio-economy workforce. The announcement was made at the Stem Cell Network Conference.
The courses are available to participants from BioTalent Canada’s Student Work Placement Program (SWPP). The new offerings are modern, engaging, topical and relevant, and are designed for a generation of learners who are comfortable in on-line learning environments.
