API partnership with University of Lethbridge & Dr. Trushar Patel examines impact of SARS-CoV-2 Virus
A partnership between Dr. Trushar Patel, Canada Research Chair in RNA and Protein Biophysics, and Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API) is aiming to uncover how a key human protein interacts with one of the primary SARS-CoV-2 proteins.
The year-long project, which is also sponsored by Mitacs, first required creating proteins in Dr. Patel’s lab at the University of Lethbridge. The team has developed a cryo-electron microscopy dataset for the human protein that is in the midst of processing, and researchers are currently working on a dataset for the viral protein.
Lab digitalization – Connectivity and cloud-based working in life science
Many scientists and researchers use spreadsheets or paper- based methods to keep track of their laboratory work. But is this a secure way of recording their data and protocols?
When working in the lab, scientists must also remember to keep up with lab equipment maintenance and be able to track samples throughout their workflows. New ways of documentation and device monitoring have been developed such as digital lab notebooks and cloud-based platforms that allow users to securely record data and protocols, track samples, manage equipment maintenance and also remotely manage their lab devices. The eLabJournal® is a web-based software that allows users to record data as well as enabling laboratories to follow ISO regulatory guidelines and work in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Furthermore, Eppendorf provides a cloud-based lab and device management platform called VisioNize® Lab Suite to support scientists with all routine tasks in the laboratory.

National Occupational Standards: a surefire way to improve role specific talent searches
BioTalent Canada is working closely with industry experts to develop a set of National Occupational Standards (NOS) specific to Canada’s bio-economy. BioTalent Canada supports the people behind life-changing science and these NOS is just another aspect of that. BioTalent Canada supports the people behind life-changing science and these NOS are just another aspect of that. If you’re an employer, wouldn’t it be great if you could eliminate some of the guesswork when recruiting talent for a specific role? At its core, that’s what NOS does.
Dirk Volschenk from Workforce Strategies and Louise Black from Entegrys Incorporated are serving as the world-class consultants in the NOS development. We asked them a few questions to shed some light on NOS and the process.

Green economy to receive big talent boost from $3.7M wage subsidy program
BioTalent Canada announced the continuation of its Science and Technology Internship Program – Green Jobs (STIP) wage subsidy. This program—funded in part by Natural Resources Canada—further supports a vibrant green economy essential to Canada’s sustainability. The $3.7M in funding will help to replenish the one resource the sector needs to thrive: young, skilled talent.
$3M wage subsidy program to provide green economy with young STEM talent
The green economy will look to continue its rapid growth through an infusion of talented youth as Canada begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. To aid in this continued rise, BioTalent Canada announced that Environment and Climate Change Canada has renewed its financial support of the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program. The $3M commitment will fund 103 internships.
Brains, not just buildings, key to expanding domestic life sciences
Canadians are rightfully pleased that our country is now among the world leaders in COVID-19 vaccination rates. At the same time, however, our excitement is tempered by the recognition that we have been so dependent on foreign producers to make it happen.
Among the many eye-opening impacts of the global pandemic, Canada’s inability to develop and produce vaccines domestically has been particularly concerning. This followed similar consternation earlier in the pandemic about deficiencies in PPE production. There appears to be widespread agreement that this needs to change – a cross-country understanding that a pandemic could well happen again, and Canada needs to be better prepared to respond within our own borders if/when it does.
