API partnership with University of Lethbridge & Dr. Trushar Patel examines impact of SARS-CoV-2 Virus

A partnership between Dr. Trushar Patel, Canada Research Chair in RNA and Protein Biophysics, and Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API) is aiming to uncover how a key human protein interacts with one of the primary SARS-CoV-2 proteins.

The year-long project, which is also sponsored by Mitacs, first required creating proteins in Dr. Patel’s lab at the University of Lethbridge. The team has developed a cryo-electron microscopy dataset for the human protein that is in the midst of processing, and researchers are currently working on a dataset for the viral protein.

Lab digitalization – Connectivity and cloud-based working in life science

Many scientists and researchers use spreadsheets or paper- based methods to keep track of their laboratory work. But is this a secure way of recording their data and protocols?

When working in the lab, scientists must also remember to keep up with lab equipment maintenance and be able to track samples throughout their workflows. New ways of documentation and device monitoring have been developed such as digital lab notebooks and cloud-based platforms that allow users to securely record data and protocols, track samples, manage equipment maintenance and also remotely manage their lab devices. The eLabJournal® is a web-based software that allows users to record data as well as enabling laboratories to follow ISO regulatory guidelines and work in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Furthermore, Eppendorf provides a cloud-based lab and device management platform called VisioNize® Lab Suite to support scientists with all routine tasks in the laboratory.

Brains, not just buildings, key to expanding domestic life sciences

Canadians are rightfully pleased that our country is now among the world leaders in COVID-19 vaccination rates. At the same time, however, our excitement is tempered by the recognition that we have been so dependent on foreign producers to make it happen.

Among the many eye-opening impacts of the global pandemic, Canada’s inability to develop and produce vaccines domestically has been particularly concerning. This followed similar consternation earlier in the pandemic about deficiencies in PPE production. There appears to be widespread agreement that this needs to change – a cross-country understanding that a pandemic could well happen again, and Canada needs to be better prepared to respond within our own borders if/when it does.
