National, Ontario Region and Greater Toronto Area Bio-economy Employment Estimates by Industry, 2019

A table describing the top five industries by NAICS code and their estimated employment in the GTA.  Overall, 38,340 workers are employed in the bio-economy in the GTA.  The pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry (NAICS 3254) employs 10,660 workers, representing 28% of total bio-economy employment in the area.  The soap, cleaning compound and toilet preparation manufacturing industry (NAICS 3256) employs 4,350 workers, representing 11% of total bio-economy employment in the area.  Hospitals (NAICS 6220) employ 3,940 workers, representing 10% of total bio-economy employment in the area.  The medical equipment and supplies manufacturing industry (NAICS 339110) employs 3,730 workers, representing 10% of total bio-economy employment in the area.  The R&D in physical, engineering and life sciences industry (NAICS 541710) employs 3,680 workers, representing 10% of total bio-economy employment in the area.  “Other” industries employ 11,980 workers, representing 31% of total bio-economy employment in the area.
