National Bio-economy Employment Estimates by Industry, 2019

A table showing the 2019 estimates for bio-economy employment by industry.  Overall, the bio-economy employed 199,270 workers in 2019.  The pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry employed 30,850 workers, representing 15% of total bio-economy employment.  Hospitals employed 29,040 workers, representing 15% of total bio-economy employment.  The R&D in physical, engineering and life sciences industry employed 28,990 workers, representing 15% share of total bio-economy employment.  The medical equipment and supplies manufacturing industry employed 19,990 workers, representing 10% of total bio-economy employment.  Testing laboratories employed 18,890 workers, representing 9% of total bio-economy employment.  Universities employed 12,580 workers, representing 6% of total bio-economy employment.  The soap, cleaning compound and toilet preparation manufacturing industry employed 11,480 workers, representing 6% share of total bio-economy employment.  The measuring, medical and controlling device manufacturing industry employed 6,610 workers, representing 3% of total bio-economy employment.  The animal food manufacturing industry employed 5,010 workers, representing 3% of total bio-economy employment.  The aquaculture industry employed 4,340 workers, representing 2% of total bio-economy employment.  “Other” industries employed 31,490 workers, representing 16% of total bio-economy employment.
