Metro Vancouver Bio-economy Hiring Requirement Outlook by Job Function, 2021-2029

Overall, an estimated 4,880 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 430 additional workers in 2021; 660 in 2022; 610 in 2023; 570 in 2024; 260 in in 2025; 580 in 2026; 620 in 2027; 590 in 2028; 560 in 2029.   For manufacturing and production, an estimated 1,010 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 180 additional workers in 2021; 140 in 2022; 120 in 2023; 110 in 2024; 60 in 2025; 100 in 2026; 110 in 2027; 100 in 2028; 90 in 2029. This represents 21% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For research and development, an estimated 990 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 60 fewer workers in 2021 followed by 150 additional workers in 2022; 140 in 2023; 130 in 2024; 50 in 2025; 140 in 2026; 150 in 2027; 150 in 2028; 140 in 2029. This represents 20% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For management, finance and administration, an estimated 800 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 160 additional workers in 2021; 100 in 2022; 90 in 2023; 80 in 2024; 40 in 2025; 80 in 2026; 90 in 2027; 80 in 2028; 80 in 2029. This represents 16% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For distribution and logistics, an estimated 340 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 70 additional workers in 2021; 40 in 2022; 40 in 2023; 30 in 2024; 10 in 2025; 40 in 2026; 40 in 2027; 40 in 2028; 30 in 2029. This represents 7% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For marketing, business development and sales, an estimated 340 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 110 additional workers in 2021; 40 in 2022; 30 in 2023; 30 in 2024; 10 in 2025; 30 in 2026; 30 in 2027; 30 in 2028; 30 in 2029. This represents 7% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For quality control and assurance, an estimated 250 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 20 additional workers in 2021; 30 in 2022; 30 in 2023; 30 in 2024; 10 in 2025; 30 in 2026; 40 in 2027; 30 in 2028; 30 in 2029. This represents 5% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For information technology, an estimated 160 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 20 additional workers in 2021; 20 in 2022; 20 in 2023; 20 in 2024; less than 10 in 2025; 20 in 2026; 20 in 2027; 20 in 2028; 20 in 2029. This represents 3% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For legal and regulatory affairs, an estimated 130 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: 50 additional workers in 2021; 10 in 2022; 10 in 2023; 10 in 2024; 10 in 2025; 10 in 2026; 10 in 2027; 10 in 2028; 10 in 2029. This represents 3% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.  For “other” job functions, an estimated 860 additional workers will need to be hired by 2029, broken down by year as follows: less than 120 additional workers in 2021; 130 in 2022; 130 in 2023; 130 in 2024; 70 in 2025; 130 in 2026; 130 in 2027; 130 in 2028; 130 in 2029. This represents 18% of the overall hiring requirement in the area’s bio-economy.
