Helping the Visually Impaired Build a Career with eSight

Meet Yvonne Felix: she is a working professional, a mother of two, a public and community artist, and an avid traveler and golfer. With her job, Yvonne travels across the continent to lead meetings, and commutes daily from her home in Hamilton, Ontario, to her office in Toronto’s downtown core.

Yvonne Felix successfully juggles all of these priorities (and more) on a daily basis. And the most unbelievable part of it all? Yvonne is legally blind.

A Q&A with BC’s Largest Biotechnology Company, STEMCELL Technologies

Dr. Allen Eaves, STEMCELL’s President and CEO, started the company as a side project within his core research group at the Terry Fox Laboratories in Vancouver. In 1993 – STEMCELL’s first year of operations – the company employed eight people and, selling only cell culture media for growing blood-forming stem cells, generated $1 million in sales. Today, STEMCELL is one of Canada’s largest biotechnology employers and has more than 900 employees, over 700 of whom live in Greater Vancouver, while the remainder are based out of our 11 international offices.

Compliance – Companies Are Taking Notice

The year 2017 marks a major milestone for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and many businesses and non-profits across the province are taking notice to ensure they comply.

AODA’s accessible employment requirements took effect on Jan. 1, 2016 for companies with 50 or more employees. All remaining companies from 1-49 employees will also be subject to those same rules by Jan. 1, 2017. The only exemption is for people who are self-employed and do not have employees.
