Job Description Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for a variety of activities pertaining to STEMCELL’s accounting cycles, including preparing periodic financial statements and reports, performing month-end and year-end procedures, ensuring global accounting, audit and tax compliance and managing relationships with key financial service providers (including but not limited to cross-functional departments, auditors, tax advisors) as required to manage the accounting financials.

This role drives the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensures that the reported results comply with local regulatory accounting principles and local statutory requirements where STEMCELL does business.

Education & Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of related experience including previous accounting and/or financial experience; supervisory experience of a team is preferred.
  • Professional designation.
  • Strong business and financial acumen and a willingness to have an impact on the business beyond the disciplines of corporate services and finance.
  • Experience with a manufacturing environment would be an asset.
  • Specific experience with local tax incentive programs and other such tax incentive programs a distinct asset; familiarity with similar tax programs globally would also be an asset.
  • Structured, disciplined and organized; a systems thinker with demonstrated process improvement skills and knowledge of accounting best practices and standards.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, presentation); communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; listens to others to obtain information.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships with senior management, external providers, business partners etc.
  • Has a sense of urgency, demonstrates the ability to manage own time, activities and resources to ensure department standards are met on a consistent basis.
  • Advanced level computer skills, including hands-on experience with an accounting software package and an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in a multi-divisional, multi-currency environment.
  • Experience with an ERP conversion an asset.
  • A self-starter who is driven and focused.
Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Lead internal and external monthly and year-end consolidated financial statements by preparing working papers (e.g. reconciliations, G/L account analysis, and standard month-end journal entries) of STEMCELL Group of Companies (SGC), adhering to the company’s close processes and procedures with a focus on taking ownership to keep external audit costs to a minimum.
  • Serve as a key resource for the local Finance team in responding to various queries regarding monthly and/or quarterly budgets.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly and/or year-end financial internal reporting for the jurisdiction(s) of where STEMCELL operates.
  • Analyze complex financial information, summarize financial analysis and provide recommendations of accounting treatment.
  • Support year-end tax filings, tax incentive claims and claims for the jurisdiction(s) of where STEMCELL operates.
  • May be a reviewer of tax filings and claims prepared by the Accountants if needed.
  • Spot errors and gaps in local processes; recommend and implement ways to improve efficiency and spending.
  • Review and recommend modifications to local accounting systems and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance is met for internal and external audits based on local taxation regulations, accounting and financial principles, and company standards.
  • Develop and document local business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal control.
  • Liaise with local and global Financial Analysts and Accounting Managers to improve financial procedures.
  • Provide input into department’s goal setting process.
  • Provide supervisory oversight of assigned Accountant(s) as needed, including technical training, support/advice, planning, assigning and reviewing of work.
  • Other duties and projects as required by the business.
