The Company Mission Statement

A mission statement guides companies in working with clients, partners, etc. It helps the management team and employees focus on a common goal, and provide a benchmark against which to gauge performance.

The mission statement articulates the organization’s vision and values; it can be an effective tool for leadership, public relations, and decision making. It also provides employees with a clear understanding of the organization’s overarching goals. When creating a mission statement, a company should involve their core management team. Ensure that all facets of the organization are considered.

A mission statement should include the following:

  • State the organization’s strengths, values, and purpose.
  • State the organization’s core values.
  • Say why the organization exists (What you provide? What you are trying to accomplish?).
  • Name any unique competitive advantages.
  • State the organization’s overall strategy for determining long-term success.
  • Indicate the level of excellence that you expect from partners and employees.
  • Include how you define excellence in relation to the core values and to the vision.

Your mission statement should be able to withstand the changes that occur over time in your product or service offerings, or customer base.
