“Happy news! Got the job!” speaks to the goal of the BioSkills Recognition program, when one of the recent participants landed a job at a top biotech firm.
IEPs bring talent, innovation and a new perspective to Canadian employers. However, many talented professionals continue to have their skills and experience overlooked by hiring managers within the Canadian bio-economy, which is a disadvantage to both groups.
BioTalent Canada’s BioSkills Recognition program is an initiative aimed to facilitate skills transfer for internationally-educated health professionals who have delays or who fail in getting licensed to practice in a regulated health profession, and who want to consider alternative career paths in biotechnology.
Job seekers create an online portfolio of their skills to be verified by industry professionals. Once successfully validated, and deemmed BioReady™, the job seeker is added to BioSkills Match, BioTalent Canada’s database of job seekers. Employers looking for skilled candidates will know that BioReady™ professionals have the skills and experience to work in Canada’s bio-economy.
“Job opportunities constitute the top reason IEPs come to Canada, yet 44% still face underemployment,” says Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “In an industry where over half of the companies grapple with skills shortage, it just makes sense for biotech employers to look at underutilized talent pools like IEPs.”.
Five top biotech employers have committed to considering BioReady™ Candidates: Therapure Biopharma of Mississauga, Charles River Laboratories of Montreal, Synaptive Medical of Toronto, New β Innovations Canada of Burnaby, and Guelph Vision Therapy Center of Guelph, all “Showcase Employers” of BioTalent Canada. This year BioTalent Canada is looking to get commitments from more biotech companies across the country.
“As a leader in biomanufacturing, innovations and biologics, and one of Canada’s fastest growing companies, we understand the need to hire talented individuals with the skills and experience to keep our company at an industry-leading level,” says Donna Husack, Director of Human Resources at Therapure Biopharma. “BioTalent Canada’s BioSkills Recognition program helps our recruiters quickly identify those individuals.”
