TerraVerdae BioWorks Inc is developing an innovative bio-refinery platform for the conversion of “green” methanol and/or methane into high value sustainable bio-based products. Our capabilities and focus extend to development of next generation biodegradable materials, biochemicals and bioactive metabolites as sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived plastics and chemicals. We work in partnership with leading academic institutions, national laboratories and major global bio-industrial companies, and have operations in Canada, Europe and USA.

TerraVerdae BioWorks is seeking an experienced, quality minded, self-motivated, and detail oriented team player for the position of Biopolymer Development Scientist in our Edmonton Research and Development facility to support our global bioprocess development effort.

Position Summary:

• Biopolymer Development Scientist responsible for coordinating technology development efforts including development of new products, interfacing with customers regarding technical issues, and lead strategic product development initiatives.
• The ideal candidate has strong technical aptitude, is highly motivated and energetic with excellent organizational and communication skills and has the ability to analyze and develop creative solutions to challenging problems.
• The successful candidate will be a key member of a team focused on development and optimization of bioproduction processes and will work closely with a broader global team including biology and biochemistry researchers, downstream chemists and engineers, and external collaborators.
• The successful candidate will be responsible for adherence to regulatory requirements and to all standard work processes while executing complex projects for process improvement and innovation. 

Education & Qualifications: 

PhD or Master’s Degree in biopolymer engineering, polymer biochemistry or related discipline.


• 3-5 years experience in a related industrial bioprocess environment
• Knowledge of polymer chemistry and modification technologies focusing on biobased resins, biopolymers, natural fibers, biocomposite and bioplastics,.
• Experience with processing and characterization of polymers including blown film, extrusion, casting and physical & chemical property testing.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

• The Biopolymer Development Scientist will have responsibility for developing, evaluating and optimizing technologies, processes and methodologies for production of new biopolymer materials and their incorporation into new products.
• Apply the latest knowledge of biopolymer chemistry, biochemistry, polymer formulation and compounding to develop creative, next generation functional prototype materials and products.
• Lead/assist the development of new product concepts, building business cases for proposed initiatives or solutions and coordinating and supporting the introduction of biomaterial products.
• Knowledge of ABS (HACCP and ISO Standards) as well as regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to development of protocols, guidelines, SOPs and experimental protocols.
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal team members, government, academic, and industry partners and collaborators.

Skills & Competencies: 

• Strong project management, organization, facilitation, problem solving, and quantitative analysis skills are essential.
• Ability to plan projects effectively, set goals, manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines while managing conflicting priorities and maintaining a high level of detail and accuracy.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to prepare project reports, technical papers for publication and presentation, and draft proposals in response to RFPs, grants, etc, as well as understand and document heterogeneous data and communicate effectively.
• Utilization of software tools such as Design of Experiments software.
