As Canada's bio-economy matures and moves more into the commercialization stage new positions and skills are required. For Canada's bio-economy potential to be fully realized it is important the human resource requirements are fully understood and supported. Biotechnology’s fusion of science and business creates unique requirements for occupations in the sector. Executives and managers must have technical expertise; technical staff often need entrepreneurial skill sets. Finding people with the full package for a specific position can be challenging for employers. For these reasons, occupational descriptions from other sources don’t exactly fit the bio-economy context.
Right now, we need biotechnology leaders like you to validate 17 new profiles that we've developed with industry - making sure they accurately reflect real-world requirements. Take part in our focus groups and:
Stage 1: Industry Consultation
Working Groups – Fall 2009 in Ottawa (completed)
Thank you to everyone who participated, your input has been greatly appreciated.
Stage 2: Validation

BioTalent Canada’s practical Bio-economy Skills Profiles provide valuable information for employers, educators, job seekers and students. They summarize the high-level skills required for each occupational profile and itemize in detail the common tasks associated with the functions. Because the profiles are comprehensive, not every skill may be required for a single position: instead, the profiles present the full sets of skills that could be expected of a person in a given role within companies of various stages of development.
In partnership with industry stakeholders, BioTalent Canada has initially developed skills profiles specific to key roles in the biotechnology sector:
Complete Skills Profiles
Skills Profiles Summaries
These include a quick-reference checklist that summarizes the core skills required for the position and the common tasks associated with each function.
