Course Content and Methodology

If you have ever wondered about the dynamic world of biotechnology or wanted to understand the science behind some of today's most amazing innovations then this workshop is for you.

You will learn about the most recent technologies and advancements in biotechnology and discover how they are being used within different Canadian industries.

During day one of the workshop you will examine the different scientific techniques and procedures used in biotechnology. Day two will allow you to explore the different ways in which biotechnology is being applied in the health care, agriculture, environment, forestry, food and marine industries. This workshop provides a forum for sharing experiences, ideas and questions, and offers an excellent opportunity to network with others who share a similar interest in biotechnology.

Course Objectives

Participants in this course will:

  • Discern between selective breeding, genetically engineered and cloned organisms.
  • Describe different types of biotechnology products and services.
  • Recognize the different parts of cells.
  • Describe the biological principles of molecular biology.
  • Identify DNA structure.
  • Explain how molecular biology can alter the code of DNA.
  • Recognize the revolutionary impact biotechnology is having on different industries.
  • Explore the biotechnological background of several everyday products and services.
  • Identify jargon and acronyms of molecular biology and biotechnology.
  • Discuss current biotechnological issues and technologies.
  • Network with peers and colleagues.
